Improving your home value
concrete countertop
Concrete makes an ideal kitchen countertop that is durable and seamless. Because it takes dye beautifully, it’s more versatile than stone, tile or other materials. Concrete can be plain, look like marble, be bold with a single color or stand out with an elaborate design. It is a truly modern look that is rapidly increasing in popularity and home value.

Concrete is not a static material. If you seek a surface that will not evolve or acquire character over time, choose another material. Handmade and tactile, concrete is influenced by its interaction with the craftsman and eventual user. For many people who choose concrete, the unpredictability is part of its attraction.

Hire a professional. Experienced concrete countertop contractors who know how to handle concrete are essential for a successful result. Know what to expect by looking at the contractor’s color and surface options. Veining, texture and color vary, and regular use gives a warm patina to the surface over time.

Is concrete the right countertop for you? Ask yourself if you want kitchen countertops that are:
unique and personalized
natural surface with character
high-quality and hand-crafted
not too shiny, too formal, or too common
a color or visual texture that’s not available with other countertop materials

Bright Idea
safe knife storage
As you clean your kitchen drawers and countertops, you may find that you have more knives than storage room. Here are a few ideas for efficient, convenient storage.

1. Store knives near your cutting board and cooking utensils near the stove.

2. To keep knives sharp and out of the way, use a knife storage container that holds them like a sheath.

3. If drawer space is tight, use a block-type countertop knife holder. Other utensils can be kept in a decorative ceramic pitcher.

4. Purchase drawers that fit under the counter and knife holders at kitchen supply stores to keep commonly used knives and utensils close at hand.

Home Reminder   condenser coils
Once a year, pull the refrigerator and freezer appliances away from the wall and unplug it or, if it's a built-in model, turn off its circuit breaker and vacuum the condenser coils so the appliances cool more efficiently. If you have dogs or cats that shed, do it twice a year.
