In a pinch...

Use fabric softener sheets to freshen the air in your home. Place a single sheet in a drawer, or hang them in your closets. When left in shoes they will deodorize them too.

Savvy Shopper

Leave credit and debit cards at home! Shop with cash because it is harder to part with than using plastic money. When you use cash, you’ll be less likely to buy things you don’t really need, or buying on impulse. It may be a psychological trick of the mind – but try it, because it really works.

transitional design tips
Today’s homeowners are looking to achieve a fresh blended look by bringing in some simpler, sleeker elements – without abandoning things they already own or doing a complete home remodel.
Transitional design fits comfortably between contemporary and traditional design in homes that are largely open spaces. Popular combinations are matching contemporary style with Asian influences. Plan carefully when blending new elements into your home. Clean lines and fresh décor will impress visitors and potential homebuyers when it’s time to sell your home.
Top 6 Transitional Design Tips • Don’t mix more than a couple of styles and stick to them throughout the house. • Find common elements when mixing styles. If you add modern lighting fixtures, you should also update your hardware to a modern style. • Be consistent. If you want a single room to depart from the common themes you’ve chosen, do it only in separate or private spaces to avoid a design clash. • Use something to pull different elements together, such as wall colors or fabric. • Intentionally carry themes throughout your house; if you blend contemporary and traditional styles in just one room, it will look out of place. • Keep expensive elements timeless and neutral. For example, stick with white or light plumbing fixtures because they go with anything.

Bright Idea

cooking oil spray
There’s more to cooking oil spray than you may think. Sure, it’s great in the kitchen for low fat, non-stick cooking, but it has other household uses: If you spray the inside of reusable plastic containers before storing red tomato sauce, no stains will remain when you clean them.
Sticky lock? Simply spray the key with cooking oil spray. Then turn the key back and forth in the lock to lubricate the parts.
Spray the blades of your lawn mower with cooking oil spray to prevent a messy cleanup. Newly cut grass won’t stick to the blades.

Home Reminder
prevent drain clogs
|
Drains always seem to back up Drains always seem to back up at the least convenient times, so be prepared. Basic tools to have on hand include the plumber’s helper or plunger and chemical drain cleaners.
At least twice a year remove traps under sinks and wipe the inside clean. Keeping traps clean can prevent a costly plumbing problem down the road.
