In a pinch...
Use charcoal briquettes to prevent tools from rusting. Place a briquette in a toolbox to help absorb moisture.

Or...put a piece of charcoal in the water when you're rooting plant cuttings. The charcoal will keep the water fresh
Savvy Shopper
Do it yourself! Forget expensive repair services and handymen. Scour online resources to learn how to make repairs and upgrades by yourself. If the job looks too difficult, find a neighbor or friend with the skills and knowledge to handle the project. Consider a barter by offering to plant a garden or serve as a “house-sitter” in return.

Improving your home value
The 5 home checkups you can’t ignore.
Protect your home and family by handling critical repairs before they cause problems. Be sure to have annual checkups in these critical areas, or you risk serious home damages—and a lower value for your home when reselling.

Furnace checkup includes professional cleaning and annual inspection to help you save energy and prevent harmful carbon monoxide buildup in your home.

Rodent visitors carry diseases, make messy nests, and chew through insulation and wiring. Catch them if you can or call an exterminator to be sure.

Chimney maintenance. Chimneys that are not properly cleaned and maintained can present a fire hazard. Call a chimney sweep to eliminate creosote, a by-product of wood burning that can build up and ignite.

Air conditioning filters can be overloaded or missing; that allows dirt and dust to settle on the air conditioner’s coils. Warm air causes condensation, creating an ideal medium for mold to grow and spread throughout the house.

Ground-fault circuit interrupters are designed to prevent deadly shocks. Outlets in bathrooms and those in kitchens within 6 feet of the sink should be replaced with these.

G arage door openers can be hazardous if yours does not have an electric eye that sees obstructions and an automatic reverse mechanism to prevent someone from getting squashed.

Bright Idea
unclog spray bottles
Today, so many products come in a spray or pump bottle, and many people save the bottles for reuse. We’ve all had an annoying moment when a spray bottle is stuck or clogged and won’t spray, even thought there is plenty of product left in the bottle.

To unclog a spray nozzle, pull the nozzle off and soak it in rubbing alcohol for at least 10 minutes.

Pull out the nozzle and check for any gummy residue. Peel off the leftover residue.

Rinse off nozzle with water. Blow through it to clear out water.

If it’s still clogged, repeat steps 1-3.

Home Reminder   Check Fire extinguishers
Check out your fire extinguisher To be sure your extinguishers are in working order in the event of an emergency, look for pressure standards and expiration dates. Get the family together and make a fire escape plan. Practice it together more than once.
