Private Sanctuary
A master bedroom is private space where your design and furnishings need not match the look of the rest of your home. Before you get started, imagine the space and what you'll need to create it.
Lighting
Master bedrooms require two forms of lighting: one for tasks and an ambient light source to create atmosphere. Canister lights that shine up from the floor can bring subtle touches of light and shadow. Dimmer switches help change the mood. Overall, versatile lighting will serve you best.
Color
Colors that are close to each other on the color wheel promote restfulness. For a more vivid scheme, choose colors that oppose each other on the color wheel. The easiest way to colorize a room is to find the largest pattern in the space and pull complementary colors from it. A common color palette follows a rule of 60% for a pleasing neutral on the walls and window treatments; 30% for a splash of bright color; 10% for accents in a darker color. Linens, window treatments and accent pillows should follow the same color palette.
Tip
In the bedroom, resist the urge to cover surfaces with too much clutter that can distract from the feelings of a personal sanctuary.
