Resist impulse buying
Before you make an impulse purchase, ask yourself:

• Do I really need the item?
• Will this purchase take money away from paying off debts I owe?
• Is there any risk in delaying this purchase while I think about it?
• What are the chances this item might go on sale soon?
• Can I find this item somewhere else for less?

Your Home Project
Hot water heating tips
Water heating is the 3rd largest energy expense in your home—about 14% of your utility bill. Save energy and consider upgrades to make your home more energy efficient.
A few Tips:

• Use less hot water; turn down the thermostat on your water heater to 115°F.

• Buy a new, more efficient water heater with a thick insulating shell.

• Insulate an older water heater—electric, gas or oil.

• Repair leaky faucets that waste water.

• Install aerators in faucets and low flow showerheads.

• Investigate the cost of replacement before your water heater fails.

• Drain a quart or more of water from your water tank every month to remove sediment that can interfere with heating.

• If you heat with electricity and live in a warm, sunny climate, consider installing a solar water heater.

• Take more showers than baths. You use 15-25 gallons of hot water for a bath, but less than 10 gallons during a 5-minute shower.

Cost Buster Tip
Save on utilities! Check with your power company to see if there's a cost saving plan if you use your major appliances during evening or weekend hours. Run your dishwasher only when you have a full load. Hand wash and dry larger dishes or pots and pans to avoid running an extra load. Let the dishes air-dry instead of using the heat cycle. An average dishwasher costs $60 to $100 per year to run. You could save up to $55 per year on your water utility expenses.

Home Reminder   Refrigerator:
make sure your refrigerator door seals are airtight. Test them by closing the door over a dollar bill. If you can pull the bill out easily, the latch may need to be adjusted or the seal may need to be replaced. In addition, vacuum the coils at least twice each year. Also, stock up! A full refrigerator uses less energy then and empty one.
