Unified School District 490, El Dorado Public Schools, serves students and families throughout 128 square miles in the city of El Dorado and the surrounding rural area of Butler County with a comprehensive educational program including vocal music, band, orchestra, fine arts, physical education, art, foreign language, and technology. The district has been recognized nationally for excellence in technology and takes pride in providing tools that support acquisition of 21st century skills.

Students attend one of four elementary schools, a middle school serving grades 6-8, and El Dorado High School, a 4A school serving students in grades 9-12. Pre-K students are served through a State Four-Year Old Preschool grant. The district provides full day kindergarten. The high school provides alternative programs for students who experience success in non-traditional settings or for those who need to recover credits in order to stay on track for graduation. In addition, the district is a member of the Butler County Special Education Cooperative, serving students in all nine Butler County school districts.

Butler Community College

El Dorado has been home to Butler Community College since it was founded in 1927. The then El Dorado Junior College was originally housed within the town's Junior High School. Today the college is located at the southwest corner of Haverhill and Towanda. The El Dorado campus is home to Butler's residence halls.

El Dorado– History

May 30, 1870, a petition signed by D. M. Bronson and fifty others asking that the town of El Dorado, as described in said petition, be incorporated under the name of El Dorado, was presented to the probate court of Butler county. The petition was granted, and J. C. Lambdin, A. D. Knowlton, T. B. Murdock, T. G. Boswell and C. M. Foulks were appointed trustees. The 140 acre tract which comprised the original townsite was entered on March 23, 1868, by B. Frank Gordy, and a plat of the townsite filed for record in the succeeding month. Shortly after entering his claim, Gordy sold a fifth interest each to Henry Martin, Samuel Langdon and Byron O. Carr, and with them formed the El Dorado Town Company. Town lots were laid out and sold to all who would improve them, at the rate of $10 per lot.
